“Listening in Prayer”
Psalm 46:10

1. Prayer is communion with God.

“Because God gave Christ as our substitute, we can be reconciled to God and enjoy peaceful communion with Him.” - John Piper

2. Prayer is listening to God’s heart

3. Prayer is telling God what is on our hearts.

4. Prayer is not posture dependent but is surrender dependent.

Prayer posture does not limit God from hearing us but does limit us from hearing God.

1. We have two ears and one mouth.

2. Silencing our plans allows God’s Word to speak.

3. Stilling our hurry allows us to prioritize God.

1. Do I know how to turn the wrong stuff off?

2. Do I have an open attitude that says, “Here I am, Lord”?

“Moments of stillness at the start of a prayer time are moments of surrender in which we stop competing with God, relinquish our messiah complexes, and resign from trying to save the planet. We stop expecting everyone and everything else to orbit our preferences; we recenter our priorities on the Lord and acknowledge, with a sigh of relief, that he is in control.” (Pete Greig, How to Pray, 38)

3. Tips on praying out of traffic.
a. Stop running.
b. Intentionally schedule the time.
c. Take a few deep breaths first.
d. Ask God to be present and ask Him to speak.
e. Listen for 3 minutes.
f. When your mind wanders, gently acknowledge the distraction, and return your attention to your breath.
g. Take notes.
