The Priority Question: What am I chasing after?
• This does not mean the physical world.
• This does not mean the world of people.
“World” is ‘kosmos’ meaning the world in its sinful alienation from God.
1) Do I choose the lust of the flesh or self-control?
2) Do I choose the lust of the eyes we or contentment?
3) Do I choose the pride in our possessions or humility?
Two Responses: A worldly response or eternal response
Takeaway: Are you shaped more by the world or the Word?

Dig Deeper:

1. Does our culture value priorities and goals? How is this displayed?
2. What areas of our lives have priorities? Is it easy or hard to prioritize our priorities?
3. Read 1 John 2:15-17. What might it look like to love the world or the things in the world?
4. How does our culture help us live in “instant gratification” mode? How does this affect our love for the world?
5. What are some goals you have in life?
6. Read 1 John 2:15. Is this a command or suggestion? Why? What does the Bible mean when it says, “Do not love the world”?
7. Read John 15:18. Define “the world.” How does the world hate?
8. How are our priorities displayed?
9. Read 1 John 2:16. What does the world offer?
10. Discuss the choices we have in the chasing the following: craving for physical pleasure (lust of flesh), craving for everything we see (lust of the eyes), and pride in our achievements and possessions (pride of life). What are the alternatives of each?
11. Read Genesis 3:6. Relate this verse to 1 John 2:16. What is the significance of this correlation?
12. Read 1 John 2:17. How does knowing that the world cannot permanently satisfy anyone change our thinking to an eternal mindset? How is that lived out?
13. Read 1 Corinthians 2:12 and Hebrews 12:1-2. What has God provided to us to help us live with an eternal mindset?

Live It Out:

Are you shaped more by the world or the Word?

1. What are you chasing after? Do you want to be instantly gratified or truly satisfied? If you don’t know the answer to these questions, start with answering them. Explore what takes priority in your life to better understand what you are chasing after. If you’ve never done so, or it’s been a while, write out what takes priority in your life.
2. Make three choices that about your priorities. You have three choices to make to help discern if you are chasing after the world or after God’s heart. What is your response to God’s truth? Spend time with God, repenting for any way in which you follow the world instead of Him.
a. Do I choose the craving of physical pleasure or self-control?
b. Do I choose the craving for everything we see or contentment?
c. Do I choose the pride in our achievements or possessions or humility?
3. Choose a response to how you will live your life. Will you live your life for what is temporary or what is eternal? Look at your previous responses. Are they aligning with the things of this world, or are they centered on God’s will? Spend time with God, asking him to do a work in your to be consumed with His purposes and His love for others.
