The heart, in biblical terms, is the center/core of who we are.

Jesus describes himself and because he is perfectly self-aware - he chooses to do so as gentle and lowly — as the core of who He is…

Q) If you were perfectly self-aware - how would you describe yourself in 2 words?
Q) How does gentle and lowly help us see Christ's heart and his inclination toward us?
Part of the gentleness of Jesus (of God) is his heart of mercy toward us as his creation…

MERCY is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as: compassion or forbearance shown to an offender or; clemency or kindness extended to someone instead of strictness or severity; == the relief of distress; compassion shown to victims of misfortune.

Mercy can be defined as: “showing good will toward the afflicted, joined with a desire to relieve them.”
Psalm 103:8-10:
"The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities…”

God's mercy is not limited by our shortcomings & it's greater than any failure.
none of us are beyond the need for His mercy,
none of us are beyond the reach of His mercy.
The only place in N.T. where God is described as RICH in something / anything…is MERCY.
Rich in mercy is not a state of the moment kind of thing for God.
It’s a state of being - it is who he is.
Quote - Dane Ortlund (pg 175)

“Christ was sent not to mend wounded people or wake sleepy people or advise confused people or inspire bored people or spur on lazy people or educate ignorant people, but to raise dead people.”
We were dead in our sins, but God...
We were rebels against him, but God...
We were enslaved by Satan and our sinful natures, but God

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace! -Ephesians 2:4-5

These may be the two most welcome words in all of Scripture
We’re to MIRROR MERCY.
Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan exemplifies this.

A reminder:
"If our greatest need was for information, God would have sent an educator."
"If our greatest need was for technology, God would have sent a scientist."
"If our greatest need was for pleasure, God would have sent an entertainer."
"If our greatest need was for money God would have sent an economist."
BUT SINCE OUR GREATEST NEED is for Forgiveness and Mercy...
- GOD SENT A SAVIOR.
It’s at the CROSS where the justice of God and the mercy of God meet!

The blood of Christ speaks of God’s mercy. For God to show us mercy he cannot set aside justice. Justice must be fulfilled or God would not be just. So God in his mercy towards us satisfies his justice, his holiness by taking the punishment which our sin deserves, death, upon himself and the blood of his Son shed on the cross effects His mercy for us.

Mercy requires payment - The blood of Christ brought a new covenant, an eternal covenant, in his own blood which does cleanse us from sin for all eternity. The resurrection proved the check cleared. This is the gospel.
The Bible uses words like abundant, everlasting, and overflowing to describe God's mercy.

And it’s at the CROSS we see the extravagant MERCY of God through Jesus.
