1 Timothy 1:12–20 (ESV)
12I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, 13though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. 17To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 18This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
The truth of God does not change.

Sound doctrine leads to a rich and fully satisfying relationship with Christ which results in true joy.
1 Timothy 1:6–7 (ESV) -Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, 7desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.
The Law must point us to Jesus!!

Matthew 5:17–18 (ESV) - “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
The gospel of Jesus Christ is a message of grace!
1 Timothy 1:13-15 (ESV) - …though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent.
Romans 2:4–5 (ESV) - 4Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
John 1:16 (ESV) - For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
1 Timothy 1:12 (ESV) - I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,
1. Grace compels gratitude.
2. Grace strengthens you.

1 Timothy 1:16 (ESV) - But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

2 Peter 3:9 (ESV) - The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
3. Grace enables serving.

Philippians 3:7 (ESV) - But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
4. Grace inspires worship.

1 Timothy 1:17 (ESV) - To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
5. Grace is a blessing not a demand.

1 Timothy 1:18-20 -This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
Discussion Questions
1. Read Galatians 1:13-16. How does Paul’s perspective here help us further understand his high view of God’s grace in his life?

2. How would you speak of God’s grace as you share your story with others?

3. What encouragement does Paul’s description of his life before he was a Christian give us for the work of evangelism?

4. Is a dramatic testimony like Paul’s any more significant than a child who is saved? Why or why not?

5. In what way do you, or should you, guard your personal faith and doctrine in order to not “shipwreck” your faith? Furthermore, how can the local church equip and encourage Christians to keep on the right path and finish well?
