1 Peter 5:8-9 (ESV)
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
One of the weak points that Satan will exploit is an attitude of entitlement.
Entitlement: the belief that a person is inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment
The language of entitlement includes I deserve, I am owed, and I should get.
A Sense of Entitlement Robs God of His Generosity.
Romans 9:19-21
You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” 20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?
Job 41:11
Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine.
The presumption of spiritual entitlement dooms us to a life of confusion and routine disappointment when things in life inevitably go wrong.
A Sense of Entitlement Robs Us of Our Gratitude.
Matthew 20:8-12
“And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ 9 And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. 10 Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. 11 And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, 12 saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’”
An attitude of entitlement prompts us to grumble about blessings not received, instead of being grateful for those that we have received.
Comparison fuels the attitude of entitlement.
When you realize that you are entitled to nothing, you become grateful for everything.
The attitude of entitlement is overcome by gratitude and imitating the life of Jesus.
Philippians 2:5-8
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Humility and the willingness to give up our rights are not prized virtues in our world, but they are stunningly beautiful to Christ.
