Fasting & Prayer

Fasting & Prayer

By definition, fasting is abstaining or foregoing from food. Today, we may think of fasting intermittently as a means to promote better health, but biblical fasting is much more than simply a dietary exercise. Jesus himself assumed that his followers would fast and that this fasting would be done out of a proper motivation. But what is that motivation? And how do we do fasting the "right way?" And is there a "right way?" As we prepare today for our 24 hours of fasting and praying from Friday (10/6) at 6p until Saturday (10/7) at 6p, we'll be engaging Jesus' words in Matthew 6:16-18 to renew our hearts and minds in preparation.

Talk It Over

Visit npberean.org/grow-groups to find a group, start a group, or get more resources.

What was one thing from this week’s sharing that impacted/challenged me?

Treasuring God: What is God showing me about himself?

Being Transformed: How is God challenging me to grow? What is my next step in this?

Loving Others: Who do I have opportunity to live out these truths with this week?

Pursuing Unity: How can we take a step in this area, to unite us more closely together?

Next Week's Sermon

We'll be back to our Good Life Titus series as we finish up chapter 1 by looking at the necessity of maintaining the purity of the Gospel. How you ever felt like the Gospel feels too good to be true? Surely it can't just be faith in Jesus - what more do we need to add into the mix? In Crete, some teachers espoused ideas that Jesus PLUS adherence to Jewish customs was necessary for salvation. But Jesus PLUS anything is NOT the Gospel. Elders are to guard the purity of the gospel, and the body needs to be vigilant to maintain the simplicity of salvation by grace through faith alone!
