GETTING TO KNOW YOU
What was your best/worst surprise?
QUICK REVIEW
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first
time, caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

MAIN POINT
The truly beautiful one was disfigured in order to make us beautiful.

DIGGING DEEPER
1. Read Isaiah 52:13-15
a. There is an interesting pattern formed in these verses 13 - 15: this servant is exalted (v.13), followed by horrible suffering (v. 14), with worldwide consequences (v.15).
i. In verse 13, we see that the servant acted wisely, meaning He succeeded in His task of following the will of His Father and would be exalted. Subsequently, in verse 14, we see that his appearance was so marred, it was beyond human semblance.
b. How does the world judge people by outward appearance?
c. Read 1 Samuel 16:7. How does God look at people and judge success? What do you think are good strategies for seeing people as God sees people?
d. In verse 15, and in the Old Testament, such as Leviticus, blood sprinkling was used to cleanse or atone for sin.
i. Why do you think “kings shall shut their mouths because of him”? Why is it so shocking that this type of suffering would bring about such great redemption worldwide?
2. Read Isaiah 53:1 and John 12:37-38
a. Despite prophecy being fulfilled and Jesus showing signs that He is the Messiah, He was still rejected. This further demonstrates the accuracy of His word. How does this encourage us to believe Scripture by being ready for Jesus’ return?
3. Read Isaiah 53:2-3
a. Unbelief was natural in the servant based upon worldly standards. He was not an outwardly impressive individual. He had feelings like all of us, and verse 3 says he was despised, and a man of sorrow, etc.
i. Discuss what comes to mind knowing that Jesus looked unimpressive, was
rejected by people, and was a man of sorrows.
ii. Do you think He can empathize with us knowing he was unimpressive and also tempted in every way (Hebrews 4:14-16)?
