The Word that Sustains the Weary - Isaiah 50:4-9

In Isaiah 50:4-9 we see that as the suffering servant, Jesus learned obedience, bringing the words of life to a weary world, living the example we are to follow in His righteousness.

“As the true human, the last Adam, he lived out obedience to God through our common humanity as our representative and substitute: through his life, death, and resurrection, he merits salvation for all who are united to him by faith.”

GETTING TO KNOW YOU
If you could only use three apps on your phone, what would they be?

QUICK REVIEW
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time, caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

MAIN POINT
The suffering servant learned obedience to bring the words of life to a weary and disobedient world, living the example we are all to follow in Jesus our righteousness and shield.

DIGGING DEEPER
1. Read Isaiah 50:4
a. This verse is discussing how the servant studied Scripture diligently and became
a scholar.
i. Discuss what your morning routine entails.
b. Is there something you can remove in your life to be in the Word more frequently or perhaps longer?
c. In v.1a, it says, …”that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary.” The Isrealites at this time were in exile due to their sin and disobedience. As a result, they were in a season of weariness. Where God’s servant Israel sinned, THE servant and Son of our Heavenly Father, Jesus, is obedient and redeems His people.
i. Describe a time you have been able to use His word and the gospel to give hope to someone who was weary. Did it bring comfort to the person?
2. Read Isaiah 50:5-6
a. The Lord God is the title of our Sovereign Lord. It appears four times in this song (v.4,5,7,9). The second line in v.5 says “and I was not rebellious.” It shows the Sovereign Lord guiding us, and that a response is required.
i. The theme in these verses is obedience to the Father. How do you feel when you are told to be obedient?
b. How does the servant demonstrate obedience in v. 6.?
i. Do you think you would have the faith in Him to be obedient, even if it meant going through what is discussed in this verse?
3. Read Isaiah 50:7 and Hebrews 12:2b-3 starting with, “who for the joy…”
a. In what ways are we called to be firm like a flint in this world?
b. Why was Jesus able to endure the cross with courage? How can this be encouraging to us today?
4. Read Isaiah 50:8-9 and Romans 8:31-35
a. Christians will be criticized for many things. Seeing Jesus’ faith as the servant in Isaiah 50:8-9, and considering what Paul writes in Romans 8:31-35, what gives us hope? How do you give glory to Him knowing what He has done for us?
