Group Discussion: Who were the people you look back fondly on that were influential in attracting you to church or were great examples of warmth and godliness that kept you in Church?
Read aloud: Romans 15:22-33 but realize the questions below are for Romans 16
OBSERVATION: What does it say?
Read the description of why Paul loves these people that is listed right after each name in Romans 16:1-20. What are the qualities of conduct and demeanor that are never to be found in a church in vs. 17-20?
INTERPRETATION: What does it mean?
If paper is so expensive, and transporting this material so laborious, why did Paul use so much space repeating the word “Greet,” and why didn’t he just list everyone’s name one after another, and why list names when he could have said, “Greet the Church?” Did listing these names cause these people to feel highly significant? In what way? What are the actions/jobs/roles that these people played in Paul’s life?
In Vs. 17-18 Paul describes false teachers and leaders. What are their characteristics? How can dissensions (vs.17) ultimately become an appetite (vs. 18?) Ever have someone speak to you in a smooth and flattering way in order to sell you something or convince of something you knew was wrong?
In Vs. 19-20 Paul describes the Roman churches obedience to the truth of God’s Word, what is Paul’s great goal for them? Wisdom implies great insight and knowledge, how can you be wise in what is good?
APPLICATION: So what? Who’s on my list and why?
Family Time: Sit down with your children and have each one make a list of who is the most important to them and why. Put their list in a prominent place and have them add more description of why that person is important to them.
