Mission - Phil Kendon

One person's life can be the source of great inspiration for others to follow in their footsteps of faith, obedience and sacrifice. Many missionaries have inspired others to also enter the mission field, but Jesus is our ultimate example and inspiration. He gave up everything to reach out to a lost and broken human race. Eventually, he paid the ultimate price of laying down his life so that we can receive right standing with God. And now he asks of us to respond with lives of extravagant worship. We can respond by being part of a local community in time, commitment, participation, prayers, finances, service - so that we can thrust out others to serve God on the island and beyond. And we can respond by being a witness wherever we are and with whomever we are with - taking up the call to be a missionary in our own neighbourhood.

1. One life inspiring another

Jim Elliot – He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.
2. Paul the missionary

2 Corinthians 11:24-29 (NIV)
Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?

Paul inspired Epaphras, Timothy and many others to lay down their lives for the mission of Jesus.
3. Jesus the ultimate missionary

John 1:9-11 (NIV)
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

He paid the ultimate price for the mission of reaching us with God’s salvation.
4. We are all missionaries

Matthew 9:36-37 (NIV)
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.

We serve as missionaries by making the church strong enough to send people.
5. We each have our own mission field

Your personality and passions are given by God to reach the people around you.
