Introduction
Joshua understood Authority.

Exodus 17:10-11 NASB
10 Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed.
Joshua understood that victory was not won by the most effort, it is won by being under the right authority.
Joshua was a man of faith.

Numbers 14:7-9 NASB
7 and they spoke to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, “The land which we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the Lord is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us—a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord; and do not fear the people of the land, for they will be our prey. Their protection has been removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.”

Joshua was a servant.

Joshua 1:1 NASB
Now it came about after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant, saying,
If you are too big to serve, then you are too small to lead.

We all need to be reminded to be strong and courageous.

God Called Joshua.

Joshua 1:2 NASB
Moses My servant is dead; now therefore arise, cross this Jordan.
God Equipped Joshua.

Joshua 1:8 NASB
8 This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.

God Accompanied Joshua.

Joshua 1:9
...for the Lord, your God is with you wherever you go.”

Matthew 28:19-20 NASB
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Be Strong and Courageous.

Prayer Requests:

Group Discussion: Who is the most courageous person you know, and why?

Read aloud: Joshua 1:1-9

Jesus tells Peter in Matt. 16:19, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” Keys represent stewardship. What has God called you to steward and have authority over? Do you think about spiritual warfare often?

In Numbers 14, Joshua and Caleb saw an opportunity and the other 10 spies saw destruction. Why is fear our default? What is the difference between fear and being a realist? Is there an area in your life you want to grow in your faith this year? Share with the group and pray for one another.
Joshua was a servant; Jesus was a servant leader. What does that mean for us? Matt. 20:26, “It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant,”

Do you view your participation in your family, community, church, and career as a way to serve others? Do you think this statement is true “We are most like Jesus when we are serving and giving.”
Joshua is told to speak the law, meditate on the law and observe the law. How does the word of God transform our lives? What is your favorite scripture and why? What are some tips or tools to help focus on God’s word throughout the week? How does God’s word equip us for success?

Joshua 1:9, Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua needed the reassurance that God was going to be with him. God has given us His presence in the person of the Holy Spirit. Read Acts 1:8, how does the Holy Spirit help us be Strong and Courageous?

Family Discussion: Ask your kid to walk around the living room 40 times. If they ask questions, tell them to keep going. Ask them how they felt. Share the story of the children of Israel wandering for 40 years and how Joshua took them into the promised land.
