Conduct Yourselves
Phil. 1:27
Pastor Jerry Koller
Whether he gets to see them again or not, he tells the saints to conduct yourselves in a (certain) manner...
· The word conduct has to do with citizenship of some sort.
· It required complete loyalty to the city-state to which one was a citizen.
· Paul exhorts the brethren to conduct themselves as citizens—not of any earthly kingdom but as citizens of heaven.
The saints at Philippi were to conduct themselves—to live the life of a citizen, a citizen of the kingdom of God, in a manner that is worthy.
· bringing something into equilibrium or balance, like the balance of a scale.
· In balance or in a manner that is worthy of the Gospel of Christ.
· Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet.
· Jesus is the beginning and the end, the beginning and the end of life—physical as well as spiritual.
The word translated Gospel, literally means good news.
What is the Gospel?
· The story of how one can find forgiveness of sin and life everlasting through Jesus Christ.
· It includes His death and resurrection.
· It includes calling upon Him for salvation.
· It also includes bad news—the reason why we need forgiveness of sin.
· The Gospel includes how we are to live as followers of Jesus.
· It includes how we are to love God and love one another.
· It includes the components of our salvation, such as God’s choosing and calling, such as redemption, justification, sanctification, and glorification.
· It includes God’s entire plan to redeem a people for Himself—when the plan was put in place and how it is carried out.
· It includes all the ways God has revealed Himself to us: through creation, through Jesus, through the Scriptures.
As citizens of heaven, the saints at Philippi were to live as citizens of God’s kingdom in a balanced man, one that is worthy of the Gospel of Christ: whether I come and see you or remain absent.
If the saints live their lives as citizens of heaven in perfect balance with the Gospel of Christ, then he will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the Gospel.
· Standing firm—being strong and sure, unwavering in devotion, fixed on the cause; standing side-by-side with others.
· In one spirit—being like-minded, having the same mentality.
· With one mind—with the will, emotions, desires, and affections; soul.
· Striving together—contending together reflects joint-effort or cooperation; fight or struggle together side-by-side.
The brethren are to stand firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together as a team for the faith of the Gospel, or faith that is a result of the Gospel.
APPLICATION
Until Jesus comes, we can Conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.
· We can live our lives in complete balance with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Until Jesus comes, we can Stand firm in one spirit, side-by-side, with the same focus or mentality.
Until Jesus comes, we can Strive together in a joint-effort, side-by-side, striving together as a team—for the faith that is a result of the Gospel.
