Dig Deeper:
1. We are wired for relationships. Why is this? How is this exhibited in our everyday lives?
2. Discuss how our culture is saturated with people searching for answers to questions like: Who am I? Why am I here? Do I matter?
3. Have you ever asked the questions listed above? If so, where did you go looking for answers?
4. How many people do you think really know you in a real, honest, and transparent way? Why do you think that is?
5. Read Psalm 139:1. What is the significance of “searched” being past tense while “have known” signifies both the past and present. Does this mean the God is not searching us currently?
6. Read Psalm 139:2-3. Who is the subject doing the action in these sentences? Why is that significant?
7. Psalm 139:4-5. Is it comforting or convicting (or both) to know that God knows everything about you? Explain your answer. How does this passage help explain the nature of God?
8. God knows everything! Why, then, is it still necessary to pray, knowing that God is all-knowing (omniscient)?
9. Read Psalm 139:7-8. How does this passage show us that God is always with us, regardless of our actions?
10. Read Psalm 139:9-12. Is it comforting or convicting (or both) to know that God is everywhere at all times (omnipresent)? Explain your answer. How does this passage help explain the nature of God?
11. Read Psalm 139:13. What does it mean for God to create our “inward parts”? How is this tied to who we are specifically and uniquely?
12. Read Psalm 139:14-16. Do you look at yourself the same way as God does? How does God look at us this way? Who does God see when He looks at us?
13. Is it comforting or convicting (or both) to know that God is all powerful (omnipotent)? Explain your answer. How does this passage help explain the nature of God?
14. Read Psalm 139:17-18. How are God’s thoughts precious to you?
15. Have you ever been in a difficult situation and have been reminded that you are still with God (v18)? Share your experience.
16. Read Psalm 139:23-24. What is the significance of ending the psalm this way? How has everything in the psalm led up to this point?
17. In Psalm 139:23-24, what is the psalmist doing? What is the psalmist asking God to do?
18. What did you learn about prayer through this psalm?
19. Has anything from this discussion, or time in the Word, made you view God differently than you’ve have previously? If so, how?
20. How would you summarize the psalm?
Live It Out:
We are fully known and fully loved by God. What area of your life do you place in God’s hands? Where is God asking you to trust Him? Read Psalm 139:23-24, and ask God to search you and know your heart by growing in your knowledge that:
1. God intimately knows you. Read Psalm 139:1-6. How does your relationship deepen with God with the understanding that He knows everything and continues to love us unconditionally? Write a list of all the things that God know about you (both positive and negative) and then pray to Him, thanking Him for knowing everything about you and loving you unconditionally. Deepen your relationship with God today knowing that he intimately knows you.
2. God is always everywhere. This week, regardless of where you go, be reminded that God is everywhere. Nothing can separate you from Him. Write out your daily routine and reflect on when you might find yourself “disconnecting from God” and why that might be. Throughout each day, call out to him in prayer and praise…even during the times when you might not be in the habit of doing so.
3. God wonderfully made you in Him image. We are made in the image of God. Read Psalm 139:14 and praise God by writing a list of all the ways He has made you. Extend your praise by also seeing God’s power in His design not just of you but of all creation. Spend time worshiping God this week in song, praise, and prayer.
