How long will you wait for a restaurant table?
Depends!
1) How good is the food?
2) What will I do while I wait? Visit with friends? Will there be appetizers?
Patience is a fruit of the spirit not a requirement for salvation. Therefore, it must be developed over time not simply appear naturally.
How long will you give God to do the work in you and in the world? How long will you give him to resolve your crisis of faith or your job situation? That is what we will consider this morning. Let me say from the outset that lack of patience is undermining our faith.
Jesus said it like this in regards to persevering/waiting well:
But the one who endures to the end will be saved. - Matthew 24:13
The trouble with waiting is that it takes a long time and we may get:
1) Bored and try something new and more exciting.
2) Frustrated and give up our hope.
3) Just give up after a while.
How do we develop patience and wait well?
1) Mindset of debtors - humility / gratitude.
2) Act like heirs who steward their inheritance. (Eschatological living means we learn what is ahead of us in heaven and begin to implement heaven on earth today.)
3) Work the process. A) Develop Godly habits. B) Set our mind on things above. C) Lean into the community of believers. D) Disciple others.
13 Until I arrive, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. 15 Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers. - 1 Timothy 4:13-16
