Dig Deeper:
1. The psalmist of Psalm 42 gets real. After asking “How are you?” to someone, imagine that person’s response is similar to the psalmist. Would that alarm or surprise you? Why or why not?
2. What is a more typical response to “How are you”? Why do we often respond that way, even though we might have a different response that we keep inside?
3. Read Psalm 42:1-5a. The psalmist is comparing two different experiences, what is happening now and what has happened in the past. Discuss the difference between these two scenarios.
4. Can you relate to the psalmist? Have you ever felt like this in a difficult season? Share about your experience.
5. Read Psalm 42.5. How does the psalmist’s tone change in this verse?
6. Read Hebrews 11:1. How are faith and hope connected? How are they different?
7. Read Hebrews 10:23. Why is it vital to place our hope in God at all times, especially during difficult seasons in life?
8. Read Psalm 42:6 and Psalm 77:11-12. Describe a time when you had to look back to the past in order to see God as present.
9. Read John 4:13-14. What happens when we place our hope in anything but God?
10. Why do we easily forget that our deepest longings are satisfied in Christ alone?
11. Read Psalm 42:1. Why would a deer long for “flowing streams”? What would the deer do to find it? How does desire drive our actions?
12. How can we “thirst” more for God?
13. What did you learn about prayer through this psalm?
14. Has anything from this discussion, or time in the Word, made you view God differently than you’ve have previously? If so, how?
15. How would you summarize the psalm?
Live It Out:
Our deepest longings are satisfied in Christ alone. Are you desperate for God?
Throughout this week, reread Psalm 42. What does the psalm make you think? What does the psalm make you feel? What does this psalm make you want to do?
Meditate specifically on verses 5-6. Write out anything that are lies from your own mind or whispers from Satan. Then, write out the truth of God’s Word next to each lie and whisper.
Examine why you might not be desperate for God. Then, spend time in prayer, sharing that with Him. Ask God to make your desire for Him grow so that you long for Him more.
Reading Plan:
Monday: Psalm 42
Tuesday: John 4:1-12
Wednesday: John 4:13-18
Thursday: John 4:19-26
Friday: John 4:27-38
Saturday: John 4:39-42
