Spirit or Flesh
Locations & Times
First United Methodist Church of Lexington - Downtown
200 W High St, Lexington, KY 40507, USA
Sunday 8:30 AM
Sunday 11:00 AM
The words Spirit and flesh are used over 8 times apiece in this passage. The writer highlights a contrast about the two spheres of influence, or places to live, in the world.
Both places (Spirit and flesh) are moved into by faith walking. Faith in Christ and walking in his ways moves us into the Spirit while faith in ourselves and walking in our own desires brings us to live in the flesh.
Distinct benefits of walking in the Spirit:
1) Our future is secure. No condemnation.
2) Power for our present situation.
3) Freedom from our past through forgiveness.
Why do we not choice the Spirit way of life?
1) Complacency.
2) Don't know.
3) Distrust the messengers (ie. pastor or church)
4) FOMO
5) Compartmentalize.
Can we live with one foot in both camps? Yes. [Move into the Spirit's neighborhood but vacation with the flesh.]
The key is to set our minds on the Spirit and not the flesh.
A) Forgiveness instead of Resentment / Bitterness.
B) Contentment instead of Envy.
C) Peace instead of Anxiety/Fear.
Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Philippians 4:8
