Jesus invites:
1. The unexpected to follow Him
·
Some information about tax collectors:
o Jews thought they were thieves
o They were working for the “enemy"
o Romans employed Jews to collect taxes
o They got paid by collecting extra
o They were considered as evil as thieves and murderers
o They were expelled and banned from the synagogue
o They weren’t allowed to be a judge or a witness in the court
o They were a disgrace to their family
o If they went to someone’s house, they would make that house unclean
o Jews were allowed to lie to them with no consequence
o Jews saw them as worshippers of money
· Jesus went out again beside the sea. The whole crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. Then, passing by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, “Follow me,” and he got up and followed him. (Mark 2:13-14 CSB)
· “Following” is an act that involves risk and cost; it is something one does, not simply what one thinks or believes. " - James R. Edwards
· While he was reclining at the table in Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who were following him. (Mark 2:15 CSB)
· Who are the unexpected people in your life?

2. The ordinary to follow Him
While he was reclining at the table in Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who were following him. When the scribes who were Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard this, he told them, “It is not those who are well who need a doctor, but those who are sick. I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:15-17 CSB)
From the perspective of the Scribes and Pharisees, Jesus wasn’t inviting the ordinary—He was inviting the outsiders.
From the perspective of Jesus, the sinners were actually the ordinary ones!
