How do I know the Holy Spirit is a person & not a force?
1) His Possession: He possesses the attributes of God
Eternal Spirit (Heb. 9:14); omnipresent (Ps. 139:7); omniscient (1 Cor. 2:10-14); omnipotent (Luke 1:35); Spirit of holiness (Rom. 1:4); Spirit of grace (Heb. 10:29); Love of the Spirit (Rom. 15:30)
2) His Pronoun: He is noted 16x in scripture as "He"
John 16:13
3) His Personality:
qualities of a person: intelligence (1 Cor. 2:19-14), will (1 Cor. 12:11), emotion (Eph. 4:30)
treated as a person: people can harden heart toward Him (Heb. 3:7-11); lie to Him (Acts 5:3-4); resist Him (Acts 7:51); blaspheme Him (Mark 3:29); quench His work (1 Thes. 5:19)
acts as a person: speaks (Rev. 2:7); intercedes for us (Rom. 8:26); teaches us about Jesus (John 14:26); loves us (Rom. 15:30); communes with us (1 Cor. 13:14), strives with men (Gen. 6:3); guides us into all truth (John 16:13); comforts us in our trials (Acts 9:31); calls us out for service (Acts 13:2), forbids things as He leads us (Acts 16:6-7)
HIS EXISTENCE:
He is mentioned with Jesus & the Father in scripture: (Acts 2;33; 2 Cor. 13:14; Eph. 2;18)
He is present and active at key events in scripture:
creation (Gen. 1:2); baptism of Jesus (Matt. 3:16); resurrection of Jesus (Rom. 1:4); Jesus' Great commission (Matt. 28:19); Birth of Church (Acts 2); at end for eternity (Rev. 2:7; 22:17)
