Message Outline

In this passage of God’s Word, we see an epic story. Elijah challenges the people of Israel to stop limping between worshiping God and Baal. He challenges the prophets of Baal. They both are to make a sacrifice, and both will ask their God to light it. Despite their sincere effort and Elijah giving them every possible advantage, the prophets of Baal come up empty handed. The one true God, however, comes through for Elijah. By taking a look at this epic story, we see what it looks like to be all in for God. This story shows us…

1. You can be sincere and be wrong
1 Kings 18:26-29, Matt. 6:5, 1 Pet. 5:8, Acts 8:2-3, Matt. 7:21-23

2. There is only one true God
1 Kings 18:30-39, John 14:6, Acts 4:12, 1 Tim. 2:5, John 3:36

3. We should expel anything that draws us away from God
1 Kings 18:40, Matt. 5:29-30, Gal. 5:16, 1 John 2:1-2, 1 Cor. 10:13, 1 John 1:9

4. Being all in involves fervent prayer
1 Kings 18:41-43, Jam. 5:16, Eph. 6:18, 1 Thess. 5:17, Rom. 8:26, 12:12, Col. 4:2
Reflection Questions

1. Have you ever heard this passage of Scripture or topic taught on before? What stood out to you?

2. Read 1 Kings 18:26-29. It is clear that the prophets of Baal genuinely think that Baal is God. Even after Elijah mocks them, they cut themselves in devotion to Baal. Have you ever been genuine about something, thinking at the time that you are correct, but then later found out that you were wrong? How are people led away from God by people who are sincere and genuine, but are wrong? How can you help the people around you from being led astray?

3. Read 1 Kings 18:30-39. Even though Elijah’s offering is surrounded by water, God shows His power by sending fire from the sky, consuming the offering. This shows us that there are not multiple gods. Baal is a false god and the God of Israel is the one, true God. Does your life reflect that truth? What false gods are in your life? How long have they been in your life?

4. Read 1 Kings 18:40. Elijah executes the prophets of Baal. This may seem harsh, but he is ridding Israel of the prophets that are trying to pull them away from God. What in your life draws you away from God? Spend some time in prayer about it. How can you get it out of your life?

5. Read 1 Kings 41-43. After defeating the prophets of Baal, Elijah spends time in prayer. How’s your prayer life? How can your prayer life be better?

6. What is your biggest take away about how this passage affects your life? What do you need to work on? Who can you share this with and ask you to keep you accountable to accomplishing this?
