Genesis 22:7b-8
...“Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
• The sentence where Abraham says that God will provide the lamb for sacrifice - literally reads - God sees before him the lamb for the sacrifice.
Abraham and Isaac went up the mountain to worship.
• Even when their worship required a sacrifice that we can’t fathom.
Do you place your faith in the blessing, or in the One who promised it?
We all have blessings. Where does your faith lie?
Here’s how great Abraham’s faith was: Hebrews 11:17-19a
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.”19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead...
• Abraham’s faith was so great that he believed that the God who gave him this blessing would show him even greater things than he had seen.
• Not only would he still have the blessing, but by being obedient when it didn’t make any sense in human terms, God’s glory would shine even more brightly to him.
• God knows our concerns, but wants to hear us speak them to Him in prayer.
• God knows Abraham’s faith, but He still wanted to see it lived out in him.
• Through Christ, God performed the act that He would not force Abraham to do: Sacrifice - Because He knew the result was a bigger blessing:
Salvation - Which He offers to all who call upon the name of Jesus.
NEXT STEPS:
- Accept Jesus.
Mark 16:15-16
- Reflect on the question from the text.
Do you place your faith in the blessing or in the one who promised it?
- If you find yourself looking at a mountain, don’t cower in fear.
Climb in faith. Lean on your brothers and sisters in Christ for support.
- And if you’ve been faithful on the mountain, share the story.
So you can encourage those who are sizing their mountain up.
