North Platte Berean Church

One Holy Church

One Holy Church

As evangelical Christians in western Nebraska in 2023, it's easy to get tunnel vision and forget that we’re part of a MUCH bigger story. A story that has included many Christians in many parts of the world over the course of centuries. The Apostles’ Creed is a helpful reminder of the common confession we all share – the essentials of knowing and following Jesus. Like the moon, it has no light of its own, but it reflects the light of the Scriptures it’s based on. Join in as we let the Apostles’ Creed point us back to God’s Word, giving us a well-rounded understanding of the faith and a deeply-rooted sense of our place in the community of believers throughout history.

According to our staff sabbatical policy, all full-time staff, after 6 years of continuous service to Berean, may request up to 3 months of sabbatical leave.

Dan started in June 2013, so he has eclipsed the 6 years by a long while! Therefore, he'll be on sabbatical from June 19 through September 10. For more details, click the link below.

This Week's Sermon: One Holy Church
The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended to the dead.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the living and dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

* catholic = universal
What is meant by world?
1. The earth (Ps 24:1)
2. All humans (Jn 3:16)
3. People/System opposed to God (Jn 17)
The Church is a group of people
called out of the world
to be no longer of it
but set apart from it
yet remain in it
and testify to it through oneness
The Church is not "____" the _____________

(of, world)
The Church is _______ ____________

(set, apart)
The Church _________ be _______

(must, one)

What was one thing from this week’s sermon that impacted/challenged me?

Treasuring God: What is God showing me about himself?

Being Transformed: How is God challenging me to grow? What is my next step in this?

Loving Others: Who do I have opportunity to live out these truths with this week?

Pursuing Unity: How can we take a step in this area, to unite us more closely together?

Next Week's Sermon

Forgiveness can be a very misunderstood concept. Is it true that we're supposed to "forgive and forget?" Does forgiving mean we act like nothing happened? How does Scripture define forgiveness? What does it look like to fully forgive and how do we truly receive it from others and God? It is one thing to recite this line of the creed, but a whole different thing to truly experience the freedom that forgiveness offers. We'll consider some of these ideas and questions as we confess, "I believe in the forgiveness of sins."
