All societies have things they consider to be good and things they consider to be bad, and those values determine which people are valued, and which are not.

Who are the people who are most valued in our society?

Jesus did not valued people differently than society or religious people valued them.
It's not possible to overstate how much Jewish people would have hated tax collectors.
Religious people would fear that they would be contaminated by tax collectors and sinners.

Jesus called his followers to be salt and light in the world, to influence the world and not avoid it.
God doesn't care so much about what we do for him, he does care who you care about.

Mercy is a deep commitment to the wellbeing and experience of another

An attitude arising out of mutual relationship, e.g., between relatives, hosts and guests, masters and servants, those in covenant relation. It is an act rather than a disposition, with trust as the basis and loyalty as the appropriate attitude. An element of obligation is thus intrinsic.
Theological Dictionary of the New Testament

Who are the people you most find hard to be merciful toward?

Jesus came for people who knew they needed him.

John had been pointing out how people didn't live up to the law, and here Jesus is seeming to not live up to it himself.
In the Old Testament, Yahweh is the bridegroom (Is 62:5, Hos 2:19-20).

Jesus is implicitly saying that he is God and he is here... so it's not time to fast, but to feast.

Jesus assumes his followers will fast, in fact he taught them how.

Religion can become so well-worn, familiar and comfortable that when something new comes along it breaks.

Jesus is clear that he is bringing a new fulfilment to the promises of the Old Testament, and the familiar religious patterns no longer work
New wine that is still fermenting expands and will cause old skins to burst if new wine is poured into them.

Jesus is making it clear that his way cannot be contained by the old practises of Judaism.

It's also true that new christians who are 'fermenting' and growing, often will not be well contained by older systems and structure.
Jesus now models his new way by healing both a Jewish synagogue leader's daughter and a woman whose period had not stopped for 12 years and was about as 'unclean' as it was possible to be.

Jesus doesn't define himself against Jewish leaders, but he doesn't let their definition of who is valuable define his approach to people either.
Small Group Questions:
The leader can use these questions in addition to those with the booklet for this sermon series.

1)Can you think of anyone in our society that would be seen with as much disgust as a tax collector in Jesus' day? Who are the people you would find it most difficult to spend time with?

2)Have you experienced the tear when new people and new ideas get attached to old ways of doing things? What does it mean for us to be a church that welcomes new things and new people?

3)Jesus heals both someone on the 'inside' of Jewish society and someone on the 'outside'. What would it mean for us to truly be a church where everyone, from all backgrounds is truly welcome? How would we need to modify our 'wineskin'?
