Stellar Vacation Bible School Donation Board
It's the official start of summer here at Manteno Church of the Nazarene. The VBS donation board is up! This summer, "we will launch kids on a cosmic quest where they’ll have a blast shining Jesus’ light to the world. Stellar VBS rockets kids on an out-of-this-world adventure that’s light years of faith-building fun." (Direct quote - even I have trouble with that many puns.) In the lobby, grab an astronaut (or a whole crew). It will either be something easy to get local, have a convenient Amazon qr code, or be something we just need to borrow. Please have your donation back to the church by May 21. Blast off!

Steller VBS
Invite everyone! Sign your kids up for VBS and please invite their friends! We would love to see more kids come to enjoy this amazing week of Jesus, games, snacks, videos, singing, and more. Register at bit.ly/VBSmanteno23

Steller Volunteers Dinner & Meetings
There will be a volunteer meeting on the 1st day of VBS after the Sunday morning attendance. We will go over expectations, does and don'ts, and the schedule. Please plan to be in attendance. We are also offering dinner for workers and families as we have done in past years. To make planning easier, there will be a signup/reservation for each night. Choices will be between the main, a salad, or a kid friendly meal (ie mac& cheese, butter noodles) That way we don't run out of butter noodles for the child who absolutely categorically doesn't eat cheese. Dinner reservation link coming soon.

Women's Craft Night
Saturday, May 20 | 5-8pm | Ladies come and join us for BYOC night (Bring Your Own Craft). Drag out that half-finished blanket, door sign, or plant holder. Too tired to even make the effort - adult coloring pages will be provided. Join other ladies for fellowship and food while you are ostensibly working on your craft. Bring some sort of dip to share, salsa, cheeseball, fondue, etc.

Camps
Chicago Central District has its own teen and children's camps this year. Children's camp is at Olivet from July 13-16 and is for rising 2nd-7th graders. The cost is $195 and more information is available at https://ccdnaz.org/kidscamp. Teen camp will be at Cedar Lake from July 17-21 and is for rising 7th-13th graders. Cost is $250 and more information is available at bit.ly/3HlF3Lk. As you can see, camp costs a little bit more than it did when you were their age. (For me, it was $52. But our camp was a mess. But we had a lot of worship and learning about God. Thanks, Mom and Dad!) We would love to offer scholarship money to all students going to camp to have fun, make friends, and learn about Jesus. Our goal, if we have the same approximate amount of kids and teens going as last year, 30, is about $3,200. This will be about a half scholarship for everyone. (We do realize we have been asking for a lot of NYC money this year, it's okay if we don't make it. Just be ready to suggest to your co-workers that they should buy the wrapping paper, pizza card, cheese, and sausage this time.)

General Assembly
Every four years, Nazarene General Assembly and Conventions is a place for Nazarenes from around the world to gather for celebration and worship, as well as to conduct the business of the global church and its various ministries. It is an awesome experience to be there for worship. And this year, it happens to be in Indianapolis from June 9-12. There will be worship services each night at 6:30pm as well as a Sunday morning service at 10am. For more information and to register to attend anything at the convention, go to ga2023.nazarene.org The Sunday morning of General Assembly, we will be streaming the service from Indianapolis with a live host.

Middle School Riot
Friday, May 19 | 7-10pm | The next RIOT is quickly approaching. The theme for this month's Riot is “Super Smash Bros.” Dress up as a Super Smash Bros. character. Come for the games, the food, and the fun! We are switching it up this month - ladies bring drinks and guys bring snacks!

High School Hangout
Friday, May 26 | 7-10pm | High Schoolers, hang out the night on the 26th. No stress. Come play some board games, eat some food, talk some talk, or study – whatever you want. No plans, no expectations, no stress.

Sermon Notes

Journey to Grace: Sanctifying Grace Pt. 2
Romans 7:18-8:4
May 14, 2023

Romans 3:10-12
“There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”

Grace is favor given to someone who deserves the opposite.

Sanctifying Grace

Galatians 5:17
For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

Galatians 5:19-21 (MSG)
It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on.
This isn’t the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use your freedom this way, you will not inherit God’s kingdom.

Galatians 5:22-23 (MSG)
But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.

Romans 7:18-24
For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature [flesh]. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?

Romans 7:25
Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Romans 8:3-4
And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.

Make Room

Verse
Here is where I lay it down
Every burden every crown
This is my surrender
This is my surrender
Here is where I lay it down
Every lie and every doubt
This is my surrender

Chorus
And I will make room for you
To do whatever you want to
To do whatever you want to
And I will make room for you
To do whatever you want to
To do whatever you want to

Bridge
Shake up the ground of all my tradition
Break down the walls of all my religion
Your way is better
Your way is better

Ending
Here is where I lay it down
You are all I'm chasing now
This is my surrender

CCLI Song # 7122057
Evelyn Heideriqui | Josh Farro | Lucas Cortazio | Rebekah White
© 2018 A New Song For A New Day Music (Admin. by Curb Music Publishing)Community Music Songs (Admin. by Curb Music Publishing)Curb Congregation Songs (Admin. by Curb Music Publishing)Curb Songs (Admin. by Curb Music Publishing)Father of Lights Publishing (Admin. by Curb Music Publishing)
For use solely with the SongSelect® Terms of Use.
