God Is For You - week 2 (God Empowers You: Romans 8:5-14)
Our identity has an enormous impact on our life. A positive identity can be a source of optimism and strength, while a negative identity can be an equally powerful force holding us back. The good news of this series is that our truest identity is gifted to us, not built by us. It is an identity found—and never lost—in Christ. Romans 8 is regarded by some as the greatest chapter in the Bible. Its 39 verses contain the practical truths and amazing assurance that are foundational to the Christian life. These messages will deepen our understanding of what it means to be a follower of Christ and how God truly sees us and wants to relate with us. We'll explore what it means to walk in our new life in Christ, free from condemnation and separation because of what Jesus accomplished for us. ...You're invited to live with an unshakable hope that GOD IS FOR YOU.

Thanks for joining us...
The apostle Paul is resounding some foundational truths from the beginning to the very end of this incredible chapter…
Romans 8 - begins with no condemnation
Romans 8 - ends with no separation
Maybe the summary statement found in verse 31
What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?
Romans 8:1
"There is now NO CONDEMNATION for those that are in Christ Jesus…"
In life we will face consequences but, thanks to Jesus, we do not have to live under condemnation.
Your past can humble you, but God doesn't want your past to haunt you….
A religious pursuit of self-will perfection is exhausting & results in unending failure.
But the grace of God - living with the Spirit’s empowerment is a life-giving kind of existence.
The EMPOWERED LIFE is God’s spirit living within us. Helping us to become more and more what we’re intended, rescued and created to be…and become…
(read John 14 and John 16)
-he reminds us
-he counsels us
-he comforts us
-he encourages us
-he guides us
-he convicts us to keep us close
-he empowers us
Quote:
Empowering His children with the strength of the Holy Spirit is something the Father wants to do. It’s not something we have to talk Him into. – Francis Chan (book: The Forgotten God)
18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit…
The Greek term for be filled is pleroostha.
==means to be filled, controlled, intoxicated, permeated and thoroughly influenced by…
Think of a GLOVE
"The glove cannot do anything by itself, but when my hand is in it, it can do many things. We are gloves. It is the Holy Spirit in us who is the hand, who does the job. We have to make room for the hand so that every finger is filled.” -Corrie Ten Boom
Romans 8:5-6
5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
2) Empowered with godly confidence (God is WITH us)
Romans 8:9a
9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you.
3) Empowered with God’s strength (no matter what is facing you)
Romans 8:11 & 14
11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
The empowered life > the exhausted life.
