Dig Deeper:
1. Ephesians 1 wraps up with the power that is found in Jesus Christ. Why do you think Paul next writes, beginning in chapter 2 about going “from death to life”?
2. Read Ephesians 2:1-3. How do these verses describe being “dead in trespasses and sins”? Explain each phrase.
3. What are verses 1-3 saying about the despairing dilemma that sinners are in?
4. How do you think that someone who isn’t walking with Jesus would respond to this description of a non-Christian: “dead,” a slave of Satan, dominated by appetites, and destined for wrath? What is it about being “dead in sin” that is both self-deceiving and deceiving to others?
5. Why is it important to keep in mind that we, “all once lived in the passions of our flesh…”?
6. Read Ephesians 2:4-7. Why are the first two words of this passage so important? What answer do these verses give us for being dead in sin?
7. Read Ephesians 2:5. Why are the first two words of this passage so important?
8. Read Ephesians 2:7. Why are the first two words of this passage so important? Why has God made us alive? What should be our response to this?
9. Discuss the paradox of how sinners are both dead in sins, yet alive in other ways. How are we alive?
10. Read Ephesians 2:8-9. What do we contribute toward our salvation? Explain the relationship of these words: grace, gift of God, faith, not of works.
11. Why should God’s salvation humble and encourage us? In what way should the last phrase of verse 9 be evident in our lives?
12. Read Ephesians 2:10. What is the relationship between grace and works? Discuss how we are saved by grace through faith for good works.
13. What do these verses tell us about God? Our relationship with Christ? Explain.

Live It Out:

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

1. You are His workmanship. Read Romans 1:20 and Psalm 139.You are created in God’s image. If you do not believe this truth, spend time reading passages from God’s Word that share this. From what you read, write down in your own words how God has designed you in His image.

2. He wraps you in gospel purpose. Read 2 Corinthians 5:17-19. Do you know that, because God reconciled the world to himself, you have a gospel purpose? How are you using your gospel purpose to help people find and follow Jesus Christ, here and around the world? This week, pursue your purpose in sharing Jesus with others.

3. Your discipleship path is divinely prepared. The invitation is to walk the path He prepared for you. Read Genesis 50:20 and Philippians 2:12-14. Are you on the path of discipleship that God has prepared for you? How are you growing in your faith? This week, spend time in prayer and in the Word in order to continue your discipleship path. If God is prompting you to take that next step of faith through baptism, joining a small group, or serving others, let us know how we can help you.
