Descended into Hell? and Rose Again!

Descended into Hell? and Rose Again!

As evangelical Christians in western Nebraska in 2023, it's easy to get tunnel vision and forget that we’re part of a MUCH bigger story. A story that has included many Christians in many parts of the world over the course of centuries. The Apostles’ Creed is a helpful reminder of the common confession we all share – the essentials of knowing and following Jesus. Like the moon, it has no light of its own, but it reflects the light of the Scriptures it’s based on. Join in as we let the Apostles’ Creed point us back to God’s Word, giving us a well-rounded understanding of the faith and a deeply-rooted sense of our place in the community of believers throughout history.

This Week's Sermon: Descended into Hell? and Rose Again!
The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended to the dead.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From thence he shall come to judge the living and dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

* catholic = universal
Did Jesus _________ go to _________?

(really, hell)
Is this purgatory?
On the __________ _________ he __________

(third, day, rose)
Implications of Jesus' Descending to the dead and Rising Again:

1. There is no more punishment needed - "It is Finished."
2. By faith, all sin is paid in full - no fear of condemnation (God's or self's).
3. We've been made holy, adopted, reconciled, ransomed, justified, and pardoned!
4. Not just my sin, but the sin of other believers I may be tempted to hold against them.
5. We grieve very differently.
Talk It Over

What was one thing from this week’s sermon that impacted/challenged me?

Treasuring God: What is God showing me about himself?

Being Transformed: How is God challenging me to grow? What is my next step in this?

Loving Others: Who do I have opportunity to live out these truths with this week?

Pursuing Unity: How can we take a step in this area, to unite us more closely together?

Next Week's Sermon

What does it mean that Jesus ascended and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty? And what implications does that have for us today? Is Jesus' ascension as big of a deal as his sinless life, atoning death, authentic burial and life-giving resurrection or is it merely a P.S. at the end of his life story?
