You get a crystal-clear picture of God’s core nature of self-giving love.
As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”
This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
“Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.
A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” - Matthew 21:1-11
I. Jesus has all authority
- Riding a donkey signified peace
I will take the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from seas to sea. - Zechariah 9:10
At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. -John 12:16
-Jesus proclaims himself King
“Jesus is Lord.”
God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. -John 3:17-18
Here’s the question:
Jesus has all authority over nature, sickness, demons, and death, but does he have all authority over you?
2. Jesus is courageous
On a scale of 1 to 10 how courageous are you?
If you are courageous: You will…
•do the right thing regardless of the consequences.
•feel fear but do it anyway.
•not stop at failure.
•risk being criticized.
•pursue purpose over comfort.
3. Who do you say that Jesus is?
Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lordwe bless you. The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine on us.
With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession upto the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will praise you; you are my God, and I will exalt you. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. -Psalm 118:25-29
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is this?" - Matthew 21:10
The crowds answered, ”This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” -Matthew 21:11
“You are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is come into the world.” -Jesus’ friend, Martha, in John 11:27.
“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” - Jesus’ disciple, Peter, in Matthew 16:16.
“We know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” -the entire town of Sychar, after spending two days with Jesus, in John 4:42.
The question is, who do you say Jesus is? Is he a prophet? Is he a moral teacher? Or is he your Lord, your absolute authority?
Let us not say, "I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God."
C.S. Lewis
That is one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic--on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg--or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon, or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great moral teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” C.S. Lewis
