Easter - Week 4: What Race has God Marked Out for You? - John 21

Easter - Week 4: What Race has God Marked Out for You? - John 21

Guest Speaker, Pastor Ted Leavenworth shares a message from John 21, as we look at what happened after Jesus' resurrection. What race has God marked out for me? We all should ask this question of our walk in Christ. The difference between where you are and where God wants you to be is the painful experience that you refuse to endure.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU
Do you feel you are accomplishing God’s calling for your life? Why or why not? In what way can you be sure?

QUICK REVIEW
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time, caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

MAIN POINTS:
1. Restless Distraction
2. Restored Duty
3. Reoriented Devotion

DIGGING DEEPER
Restless Distraction
1. Read John 21:1-3. Verse 1 tells us that the disciples have now returned to the Sea of Tiberias (AKA Sea of Galilee). For what reason have they returned here (see Matthew 28:10)?
a. What has Peter decided to do while he waits? Do you believe he has departed from his work as a disciple and returned to his vocation? Explain.
b. Peter has also led others (verse 2) to follow him. What responsibility did Peter have as a leader? Was he being a good leader? What or why not? What are your responsibilities as a leader? How can you assure you are leading in the right direction?
c. How successful was the disciples' fishing trip? What was the reason for their level of success? Restored Duty
2. Read John 21:4-14. Jesus asks about the disciples’ success and then directs them to re-cast their nets. What was the result? Read Luke 5:1-11 and compare and contrast these stories.
a. What lesson can we learn from these stories? How can we apply them?
b. Do you find any significance to the number “153”. In what way?
3. Read John 21:15-19. What is the purpose of Jesus’ questions to Peter and why does He ask three times? Discuss Peter’s answers each time and how they differed from Jesus’ question.
a. Describe your understanding of what Jesus tells Peter in verse 18.
b. Although Peter has not followed and responded to Jesus in every circumstance, Jesus still uses him in powerful ways. What can be implied by this and how should we respond? Reoriented Devotion
4. Read John 21:20-25. What is the reason that Peter is concerned about the Apostle John’s fate? How would you interpret Jesus’ response?
a. Read Hebrews 12:1-3. Based on these verses, who should we look to for encouragement? Is there any need to compare our calling to the calling of others to guide our path?
b. Who determines the “race that is set before us” (“marked out for us” NIV)? Each of us has a race that is marked out before us. What should be our response? How can we avoid distractions that deter us from our race?
c. Peter’s fate was to die a painful death, but only because of his obedience to Jesus’ calling. Have there been painful events that have threatened your mission? How have you responded?

TAKING IT HOME
