Timeless Truth for Today - #12 Guidelines

Exploring the timeless truth of God's Word for today's living. A January through March overview of the entire Bible.

Locations & Times

Grace Community Church

Sunday 10:00 AM

Today is the 12th message in our series: Timeless - Truth For Today. We are covering the entire Bible in a 3 month period.
Since the beginning of January, we've covered all 39 books of the Old Testament as well as the first 5 books of the New Testament.
Last week we covered all 4 Gospels along with Luke's second writing, the Acts of the Apostles. The central theme of those books is simply Jesus and the Salvation that He has made available for those who repent and have faith.
Following the Gospels and Acts are books often called "letters" or "epistles" of the Apostle Paul (13 in total).
These are divided into 2 sub-categories:
-Paul's writings to churches: 1 & 2 Corinthians, Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and 1 & 2 Thessalonians
-Paul's writings to individuals: 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon
We won't be able to cover everything about all of those books. But we'll look at the big picture as to why they were written and point out the value these books have in the lives of Churches and Christians for today.

The Lord's final message to His followers in all 4 Gospels and just before His ascension was to make disciples. The Christian life is all about disciple making. Disciple making changes people and compels people to be like Jesus, and do what Jesus did.
After Jesus ascended into heaven, His followers gathered in Jerusalem to await the empowering of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2).
The church grew quickly until a time of persecution began by the Jewish authorities, led by a Pharisee named Saul. This time began with imprisonments of the church leaders and intensified with the killing of Stephen.
Acts 8:1-4
Following this, we read of Saul coming to faith and the Lord changing his name to Paul. He grew in his faith and the church commissioned him and others to go out and plant churches.
Over the span of 20 years, Paul wrote to these new churches and several of their key leaders to strengthen, encourage, challenge, and remind them of what God had done for them. He also talked about how they should respond as true followers of Jesus Christ.
Paul's letters provide guidelines or lessons for Churches and for Christians.
If we wish to honor God and help people, then we will need to take heed to what the apostle has written.

This morning we'll look at 4 guidelines about disciple making that apply to both this church and to your life.
1. Disciple making requires a vibrant relationship with Jesus and others.

2 Corinthians 5:9-11a, 13-15 [TLB]

Definition of vibrant: "having or showing great life; pulsing or throbbing with energy, activity, and enthusiasm."
2. Disciple making involves both the leading of the Spirit and an intentional strategy.

Romans 15:20
Galatians 5:16-21
Colossians 4:3

Paul's method of disciple making is seen in at least 3 areas:
-First, he spoke about Jesus as he followed the Holy Spirit's leading.
-Second, he spent time with those who were responsive.
-Third, he utilized the gifted teachers and church ministries to help people develop their gifts and callings.
3. Disciple making is best accomplished using teamwork, and not a lone wolf approach.

Romans 16
Colossians 4
In these chapters Paul acknowledges many of the people who helped him and were part of his "team."
To call ourselves a Christ-follower and live in isolation is an insult to the Lord who created us to be in community. Where are you involved?
4. Disciple making is the mission of our life and we must reorganize our priorities in order to honor God and help people.

Philippians 3
In Paul's writings he makes clear that we are not dual citizens having one passport for this world and one for heaven.
We have to reorganize our priorities. It's not about me, but about Thee
This week make a short list of 3 priorities that need to be reorganized in order to live more like Christ and less like you.
What specifically would need to change for God to be honored and for more people to be helped?
