Recap: We want to recapture and rediscover Jesus. Not the Jesus that political parties try to claim, or that pop culture wants to claim, but the Jesus of the Bible. The Jesus of the New Testament is someone who gets us. He was rejected, he was outraged, he faced struggle, and faced times where he was all alone. We live in an age of outrage & if we’re honest, often our anger is outsized. Why is that? What’s really going on? Too often we are seeking love, affirmation, belonging in the wrong things and when we feel rejected, unaccepted we let anger take over. Jesus lived with righteous anger, but when attacked personally, He knew He was loved by His Father and that was enough. That allowed Jesus to respond to mistreatment and outrage with outrageous love and grace and that changed lives.
Questions:
(1)Where and when have you experienced an “outsized” anger? Someone blowing their top over something that wasn’t really that important?
(2)The Bible doesn’t say it’s wrong to be angry. When do you think it’s okay to be angry? Why?
(3)Read Mark 3:4-5 and Mark 11:15-17. What do we see about Jesus and anger in these verses? Why was Jesus angry?
(4)Think about a couple of times recently when you got angry. Anger is like a warning light on the dashboard of our life. It tells us something is wrong. But we need to get to the WHY we are angry. When you think back to those recent times - what is the WHY? Not just the circumstance, but what was REALLY behind why you got that upset?
(5)When you think about these times when you get angry - Tim Keller says that our anger is often more about us than we’d like to admit. We feel disrespected, or under appreciated, or we’re looking for significance in people’s approval. How do you see this in your own anger?
(6)The Bible talks about a foolish way to respond to anger. Read Proverbs 29:11, Ecclesiastes 7:9, Proverbs 14:29. What do you see in these verses?
(7)Read James 1:19-20. What does this say about how we are to respond? Practically, what might this look like for you?
(8)How does truly understanding God’s love for us, as we are, begin to free us from anger and allow us to respond with love and grace?
