THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

The Sermon on the Mount is a call to righteous living.

We read and reflect on it so that we can put our hearts in alignment with the kingdom of God.

In these passages, Jesus invites us to a life of prayer and trust.
Three truths foundational for us to know when we pray to God:
1) He invites us to call him Father because he loves us as his children.
2) He is in heaven, and he sees all things, understands all things, and is in control of all things.
3) He knows what we need before we say a word.
ASK.
“Ask and it will be given to you.”

Asking is one of the first forms of communication that children learn.

Jesus tells us to view God as our heavenly Father when we pray because God loves us and loves to give us what we need, especially when we ask him.
SEEK.
“…seek and you will find”

When God doesn’t give us what we ask for, it is an opportunity for us to seek whether or not it is the right thing.

Seeking forces us to move from a “me” mentality to a “God” perspective. Seeking God’s will invites us to draw closer to him and understand our Father better.
KNOCK.
“…knock and the door will be opened to you.”

What can we do when God doesn't answer our prayers?
1. Keep praying (Luke 11:5-13)
2. Trust God

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?

Our Father knows what we need and refuses to give us what is harmful for us. Our Father gives us good gifts because he is good.
The good news is that when we don’t get what we want, we can trust God because he loves us and knows what’s best for us.

How do we know that God is good and loves us?
Because God did not even withhold his own Son for us.
