THREE WORDS THAT INVITE REVIVAL
Pioneering Revival

Radical Truth: Revival does not come to a place, it comes to a position

Genesis 3:7–10 (ESV) Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

A Key Word to understand this passage: Knew (יָדַע yada) - intimate firsthand knowledge

Life Lesson: In life there are experiences that once you open the door, there is no going back. Your experience needs to match your maturity so that you can properly bear the resulting responsibilities

What exactly did they come to KNOW.

The text says the first thing they knew was “they were naked” or “uncovered” … here Adam felt his first negative emotion - that of LOSS

Three Sets Of Three

#1 “WHERE ARE YOU?” REMINDS US IT IS HUMAN TO HIDE

9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

a) “I was afraid”

Afraid “יָרֵא” yare - fear (terror) / fear (awe)

Five Core Fears
- Loss of relationship
- Loss of identity
- Loss of meaning
- Loss of purpose
- Loss of life

So much of what we do, is driven not by our Faith but our Fears

b) “I was naked”
עֵירֹם erom - uncovered, exposed

c) . “I was hiding .
חָבָא chaba - hide oneself, i.e., conceal an object or information so it cannot be known

What are some insufficient “leaves” we hide behind?
- Blame
- Religion
- Activity
- Persona
- ???

#2 “IT IS FINISHED” REMINDS US IT IS GOD’S GRACIOUS NATURE TO CALL US OUT OF HIDING

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
(Jn 19:28–30)

Genesis 3:21–23 (ESV)
21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.

See The Grace Of God In the Story
- He calls them out of hiding
- He creates a better covering
- He sets boundaries for their protection

#3 “HERE I AM” REMINDS US THAT WE ARE EITHER HIDING OURSELVES FROM THE LORD, OR HUMBLING OURSELVES BEFORE THE LORD
2 Samuel 12:12–13 (ESV)
12 For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.’ ” 13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.

David gives us a secret to inviting the presence of the Lord, even in our greatest failure

Ps 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
