Introduction
Jesus is a peaceful man treated as a hostile.
“For if Israel has put such flame to its ‘green tree’ how terribly would the Divine judgment burn among the dry wood of an apostate and rebellious people, that had so delivered up its Divine King, and pronounced sentence upon itself by pronouncing it upon Him!” Alfred Edersheim - The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah
Jesus is an innocent man treated as a convicted criminal.
The Skull - Golgotha - Calvary
Jesus is the King treated like an outcast.
What led Jesus to the cross? (Phil. 2:8)
Man’s greatest need became God’s greatest accomplishment.
1. The forgiveness of sin is a demonstration of love. (Rom 5:8, Isa 53:10)
2. The forgiveness of sin is a gift received by faith. (1 John 1:9)
3. The forgiveness of sin lifts the sentence of condemnation. (2 Cor. 5:21)

Group Discussion:

What movie can you watch over and over again? Why?
Read out loud: Luke 23:27-38,
#1. Jesus is the perfect example of obedience to God.
What can we learn from His example? How do you deal with injustice against you?
Are we called to suffer like Christ? How does that play out?

#2. Forgiveness of sin is a gift from God. Who is this gift for?
How do we receive it? How do we forgive ourselves even after God has
forgiven us? Jesus forgave his murders on Calvary, what does that
show about his understanding of God’s plan? How does our forgiveness
of others change the world? Why do we forgive others?

#3. Do you ever think about the punishment of sin we deserve? Why are we condemned by sin? Does this condemnation seem fair? Why did Jesus have to be our substitute? Why did God not just forgive our sins without sending his Son to the cross? How is God both equally just and merciful?

#4. Isaiah 53:10 says in the NKJV “Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin,” Why did it please God to put Jesus through the scrutiny of the cross? Do you think the Godhead (Trinity) made an agreement on this plan before creation? Was his pleasure in the act or in the result of the act of the cross?

Family Time:Play a game of freeze tag but stop in the middle and ask if anybody who is unfrozen would like to take the place of a person that is frozen. How is this like Jesus taking our place on the cross?
