1 Timothy 6:1-10

"The teaching" (1 Timothy 6:1) = the true message of the gospel

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners (1 Tim. 1:15a)

Jesus gave himself as a ransom for all (1 Tim. 2:5b-6a)

Jesus was GoD manifested in the flesh,
He was vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, and taken up in glory. (1 Tim. 3:16)

“Indentured Servitude” was:
- Not based on race
- Entered into willingly and contractually
- Usually for a determined amount of time
- Included compensation
- Often empowering, not exploiting
"Enslavers" or "Man-stealers" in 1 Timothy 1:10 condemns the chattel slavery practiced in the Americas.

MAIN POINTS

DIGGING DEEPER
What Jesus has done for us….
1. Read 1 Timothy 6:1. How can we apply Paul’s admonition to the bondservants to our own situations? Read Colossians 3:22-24. Apply this scripture to your answer.
a. Read 1 Timothy 1:15, 2:5-6. And 3:16. Based on these verses, how would you describe what Jesus has done for us and why we should give Him honor?
b. Is the way we work a testimony to what Jesus has done for us? Is it possible for our work to lead people away from Jesus? Explain your answer. …changes the way we work,...
2. Read 1 Timothy 6:2. Based on this verse, how should our work habits change if we work for a boss who is a fellow Christian? How does Paul explain why this is important? Do you agree?
a. Should a Christian expect special treatment because their boss is a fellow believer? Why or why not?
b. Is there any circumstance where a Christian should give less than their best at work? Explain. … alters our priorities,....
3. Read 1 Timothy 6:3-5. Paul has words of contempt for those who teach a different doctrine. Are these words justified? Why or why not?
a. In what ways do some try to teach others a different doctrine? Discuss ways you may have encountered.
b. Paul describes these people as those who are puffed up (proud), like to quarrel, envious, slanderous, and causing friction among others. What does he say is their priority? How can we assure that our priorities are aligned with God’s?
c. What should our priorities be, and why? …and gives us a new perspective on money and material things.
4. Read 1 Timothy 6:6-10. How would you define “godliness with contentment” and why does Paul say it is “great gain”? Do you agree? Read Philippians 4:11-13. How is this degree of contentment achievable?
a. In verse 7, Paul states an absolute truth regarding our possessions. If we accept this as truth, how should we view our material possessions? In what ways should we use our resources?
b. What, does Paul say, is a snare and what does he say it leads to? Do you agree with him? Why or why not? Have you seen someone fall into this temptation or snare? What was the result?
c. If the “love of money” is our primary focus, what can this lead to? What should be our primary focus? How do we assure that our focus is on the right things?
