Mastering the money monster: Give away a percentage first. Save a percentage second. Then live on the rest
The best way to conquer the money monster is through generosity
Everyone gives
Everyone does not know how to be generous
Genuine generosity transcends random acts of giving
Generous people reorder their lives and priorities so they can be systematically generous Generous people give more, save more and consume less
Acts 20:35 The Lord Jesus himself said: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” NIV
Blessed: A way of living
If you order your life around generosity, you will be happy
Luke 12:16 The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. NIV
Luke 12:17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ NIV
Luke 12:18 Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and
there I will store my surplus grain.’
The myth: Rich people are the ones who can be generous
There is no natural correlation or connection between rich people and generous people
Regardless of income level, you can be a generous person
Luke 12:20 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you.’
Luke 12:19 Then I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”
Luke 12:20 ‘Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
Answer: Someone else
Luke 12:21 ‘THIS is how it will be’.....
This refers to total loss
Luke 12:21 ‘This is how it will be with those who store up things for themselves but are not RICH
toward God.’
The generous mindset: All that comes to me is not just for me but for God related priorities
Luke 12:15 Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.
NLT
Those who are greedy can still give
God invites us to be transformed from a consumer to an extravagantly generous Jesus follower
RICH TOWARDS GOD BEGINS WITH A PREMEDITATED PLAN
Nobody drifts into a life of generosity
Our typical plan: Consumer first, save if possible and give if there is anything left
If we don’t pre-decide, kingdom priorities will always get the leftover
RICH TOWARDS GOD IS A PREDETERMINED AMOUNT
2 Corinthians 9:7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give. NIV
Generous people give before they consume
Rich towards God: Give a percentage first
RICH TOWARDS GOD PRE-DECIDES A PLACE
Generous people pre-decide where it will go
Matthew 6:21 Your heart will be where your treasure is. GWT
First fruits belong to God (Proverbs 3:9, Malachi 3:10)
Generous people have a pre-determined plan where they choose a percentage and decide where it will go
