Today is the seventh message in our series: Timeless - Truth For Today. We are covering the entire Bible in a 3 month period.
So far we've covered the first 18 books of the Old Testament.
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther and Job

Last week we began looking at a short series of 5 books which are known as the Wisdom or Poetry books - Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. Last week we looked primarily at Job.
In the Western world we generally expect poetry to have rhyme and rhythm to the words. Hebrew poetry, however, is not based upon similarity of sound, but upon similarity of ideas.
Usually two ideas are placed together in what is called parallelism.
Understanding parallelism will help us to understand the books of poetry found in the Old Testament.
Usually two ideas are placed together in what is called parallelism.
Understanding parallelism will help us to understand the books of poetry found in the Old Testament.
First - SAME DIRECTION Parallelism (Synonymous)
In this kind of parallelism an idea is repeated. Something will be said and then the same thing will be said again in different words.
Example in Job 4:17.
In same direction parallelism, both tracks or statements are saying essentially the same thing, only using different words.

Second - OPPOSITE Parallelism (Antithetic)
In this kind of parallelism an idea is contrasted. One idea will be given and then a different or opposite thought or idea will contrast with the first line.
An example of this can be found in Proverbs 12:2.
The first line speaks of a good man and the second line speaks of a wicked man.

Another way the Hebrews communicated in their writing was the use of acrostics. Here each verse (or the first verse in a set of verses) begins with a separate letter from the Hebrew alphabet. Psalm 119 is a great example of this. 176 verses divided into 22 sets of 8 verses each, and each set led off by one of the 22 Hebrew letters.
The book of Psalms was the Hebrew's book of worship and it tells us:
The WAY to Worship.
A number of writers composed the Psalms including King David, Moses, and Solomon. The writings run the gamut in terms of expressing human emotion to God and reflect the writers trust, discouragement, worry, anger, complaints, joy, passion, and sorrow.
A good example of how this book promotes worship is Psalm 100.

The book of Proverbs was the Hebrew's book of common sense and it covered:
The BEHAVIOR of the Believer.
Proverbs 1:1-6
Proverbs is a rich study in human nature that presents many characters with whom it would be easy to attach names. Here are just a few:
1. The PRATING fool who blows off wisdom and common sense.
2. The PERVERSE person whose thoughts and actions go against God's Word and good logic.
3. The PAINFUL backbiter who slanders and complains.
4. The PRIDEFUL boaster
5. The PRACTICAL steward
6. The PROCRASTINATING worker
7. The PERSISTENT talebearer spreading truth and falsehood to stir up trouble.
8. The PRINCIPLED believer who models his life after Biblical truth.

The book of Ecclesiastes was the Hebrew's book of psychology and it covered The SEARCH for Significance.
This book represents the journey of a confused man who is seeking to find answers for the purpose of life and is searching for significance. You can hear the despair and pain of the lessons he's learned from his self-indulged lifestyle in chapter 1 verse 14.
The theme of the book is that only God can satisfy the deepest hungers of the human heart. Ecclesiastes 12:13.

The book Song of Songs or Song of Solomon was the Hebrew's book of romance and it covered The LOOK of Love.
The book is an expression of love on two fronts:
First - It is the celebration of sensual love between a man and a woman; a bridegroom and a bride.
Song of Songs 8:6-7
Second - On a much deeper level, the book pictures the passionate love and commitment that God has for His people.
True love returns love and the Song of Songs should challenge us to look at how real our love is for the Lord.
