“Ever since my book “Where is God When it Hurts” was published I’ve received letters from people disappointed with God. A young mother wrote that her joy was turned to bitterness and grief when she delivered a baby daughter with spina-bifida. A birth defect that leaves the spinal cord exposed. In page after page of tiny handwritten spidery script she recounted how the medical bills had soaked up all of the family’s savings and how her marriage had cracked apart as her husband came to resent all the time she had to devote to their sick child. And as her life crumbled around her she was beginning to doubt what she had once believed about a loving God. Did I have any advice? Some good Christians I know would reject this phrase “disappointment with God” out of hand. Such a notion is all wrong they say, Jesus promised that faith even just the size of a mustard seed can move mountains, that anything can happen if 2 or 3 gather in agreement in prayer. The Christian life is a life of victory and triumph, God wants His kids happy and healthy and prosperous—and any other state simply indicates a lack of faith. Yet, too many Godly Christians struggle every day with the exact opposite scenario. And some people wind up losing their faith because of a sharp sense of disappointment with God. They expect God to act in a certain way, and God lets them down.”

What gives me life & keeps me alive spiritually?

“At the moment, all that Habakkuk would be able to see would be the Babylonians sweeping through and down upon Judah and devastating the homes and ripping apart the community. But he must also see by faith, and accept by faith, that the Babylonians would themselves be judged. In making that statement, that the righteous will live by faith, that is a statement of principle. The whole life experience of the righteous man is built upon faith. Its immediate application is that Habakkuk must believe, in spite of the appearances, that God will judge the Babylonians, he has to live with that kind of confidence, that is an item of faith—righteous men and women find the source of their life in their faith.”
