Sunday 10:00 AM

Today is the sixth message in our series: Timeless - Truth For Today. We are covering the entire Bible in a 3 month period.
So far we've covered the first 17 books of the Old Testament.
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther
This morning and next week we start looking at a short series of 5 books which are known as the Wisdom or Poetry books - Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. The 5 books use poetry as a learning tool to help people remember the important advice within the books.
The theme of each of these 5 books can be summarized as follows:

1. Job - The PERPLEXITY of Pain
2. Psalms - The WAY to Worship
3. Proverbs - The BEHAVIOR of the Believer
4. Ecclesiastes - The SEARCH for Significance
5. Song of Songs (of Solomon) - The LOOK of Love
Today we look at the book of Job which is probably the most ancient book of the Bible. It was written long before Moses wrote the pentateuch.
Many people believe Job lived about the same time of Abraham.

The book of Job is a great story that is easily relatable for everyone. The plot of the book is largely about a man who loses everything and what happens in his life after the tragic events.
The book opens by telling us a little about Job. It starts with an interesting interaction between God and Satan. Job 1:8 [NLT]
There are only 4 people in the Bible who God calls blameless, and He actually calls Job blameless twice. This is significant...he was such a good guy that God brags about him!
When Job loses everything, it's not because he did something bad. He loses it all - his property, his livelihood, and his kids and it wasn't that he deserved it. The Bible makes it clear that the loss he was experiencing wasn't because of him.

It makes you ask the question, what would I do if I lost everything?
We are drawn to stories of loss, suffering, and pain because we want to see that something good can come from the pain we suffer.
The book of Job is filled with lessons that can help us when we face painful, stressful times.
These truths and lessons will not make those times go away. But they will help us make the best of those times, they will allow us to grow through those times instead of allowing them to shatter or crush us, and most importantly, these truths can help us live so that God can look at us and be proud.
Here are 4 truths and the practical lessons that we can learn from them:

1. The SUFFERING moments of humanity.

Job 1:20-22
Job 2:9-10
Job 19:11, 13-14, 17-18, 20, 25-27

Take Home: The burdens of this life are temporary; while the blessings of the next life are for eternity.
2. The STRATEGIC attacks of Satan.

Satan has one goal and that is to destroy as many people as he can, which includes Christians. Here's the good news, God's one goal is to save as many people as He can.
2 Peter 3:9
When God removes his hedge from Job and his family, we see Satan's true nature. Satan is very much what Peter describes in 1 Peter 5:8.

Take Home: God has a hedge for His people that may be removed, and if it is, its purpose is for our hope to be revealed.
3. The SINCERE rationalization of man.

Take Home: In times of trouble the best we can give to others is often our physical presence, rather than our verbal points of view.
4. The SOVEREIGN will of God.

We see in the first 6 verses of chapter 42 that Job learns about God and experiences Him directly. It changes Job. The encounter helps Job realize that he is a sinner and he repents.

Take Home: God's plan for our lives has more to do with our personal holiness and those around us, than it does our personal happiness.

This is a hard concept for us to get. In our culture we are socialized to believe that life should be picture perfect. But take a look at what Job's friend said in Job 5:7.
We know that Jesus died to save our souls and we put our faith in Him to redeem our souls. If He is capable of redeeming our souls, He is also capable of redeeming our pain for something beautiful.
