“Lukewarm people can fellowship just fine with other lukewarm people. They can sit around comforting each other about their sins. They can have Bible studies and support groups and talk about how people can be saved with little or no fruit in their lives…They find common ground in judging the radicals who dare think that Christ calls everyone to deny themselves and pick up crosses. They can exegete passages together, sing together, take communion, and counsel each other.”
(Until Unity, pg. 65)
“True believers can have unity, and the lukewarm people who insist on calling themselves Christians can have unity. The problems arise when we try to crossbreed. Those who have been persecuted will have an impossible time trying to fellowship with those who believe the gospel should always bring prosperity. Those who love purity can never have peace with those who are constantly saying things like, "I'm sure God doesn't mind if ..." Those who put themselves at risk for the gospel will never understand the people who beg them not to. Those experiencing and displaying the love of Christ will always struggle with those who only talk about it.”
(pg.67)
“When ‘Christians’ gather today, they boast about their favorite teacher and how well he or she explains the Word. They talk about churches, worship bands, schools, theologians, books, songs, denominations, ministries, political issues, social issues, pastors, singers, and so on. Inevitably disagreements arise about who is most accurate, anointed, intelligent, or wise. Once you pick your favorite leader, you heads to the island where everyone worships him or her. Suddenly you feel unity again because surround yourself with people who agree with you regarding your leader or your theology. You agree on the strengths of your leader, and you agree on the weaknesses of the other camps.” (pg. 116)
“Many churches have forgotten the point of their existence. They can quickly focus on the complaints of their people rather than the cries of the lost. We get more emotional over Christians leaving to go to a different church than we do about people dying and going to Hell. Something is horribly wrong when we grieve more deeply over people rejecting us than those who reject their Messiah.” (pg. 81)
