This morning is a baptism Sunday here at GracePoint. Baptism is designed to be an outward symbol of a person’s spiritual relationship with Jesus.

1. Baptism speaks of having been united with Jesus in his _________

Don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death ... Romans 6:3-4a, NIV

The negative spiritual consequences of our old life without Christ have been dealt a death blow. Baptism symbolizes a person’s spiritual union with Christ so that his death becomes their death.

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20, NIV

The basis of our union with Christ in his death is the result of faith in the Son of God.

2. Baptism speaks of having been united with Christ in his _________

We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Romans 6:4, NIV

The moment a believer’s old life of unbelief and rebellion died at the point when they first trusted Christ a new spiritual person was, as it were, raised from the dead.

You were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. Colossians 2:12, NLT

This new life is one characterized by God’s presence and power; God’s grace and mercy; God’s love and forgiveness; God’s wisdom and courage; God’s comfort and care.
