And He said to them, “When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me: ‘And He was counted with wrongdoers’; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment.” 38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

Luke 9:1-5, “Do not take anything with you…”
Luke 22:35-38, Take a purse, a bag, sell your robe and get a sword.

“…as was His custom…”
40 Now when He arrived at the place, He said to them, “Pray that you do not come into temptation.” 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove “this cup” from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground].
45 When He rose up from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you do not come into temptation.”
What is Jesus teaching me?

What is in the cup???
#1. The wrath of God: God’s righteous judgment for sin.
Isaiah 5:1-7, 51:17, 63:1-6, Jeremiah 25:15, Ezekiel 23:33:
…wrath will be against all nations!
By drinking the cup Jesus is providing:
#1. A Propitiation to God the Father: Satisfaction of justice.
He Himself (Jesus) is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
I John 2:2
#2. A Redemption from Satan: Purchased out of slavery.
Knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but (redeemed) with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.”
I Peter 1:18-19
#3. A Substitutionary Atonement from death.
1 lamb for 1 man, 1 family, 1 nation, 1 world.
“I have come to do thy will…” By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:9-10
#4. A Reconciliation to God: change from alienation to friendship.
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their wrongdoings against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. II Corinthians 5:17-20
By drinking the cup Jesus is doing for me what I can’t do for myself!

Luke 22:35-46, January 26 & 29, 2023
Prayer Requests:
Group Discussion: What’s one thing your parents taught you to do or that you taught your own kids?
Read out loud: Luke 22:35-46,
What is Jesus teaching me?
#1. Use your resources well. Vs. 35-38, Buy truth and do not sell it, Get wisdom and instruction and understanding. Proverbs 23:23. If you could buy 1 area of wisdom what topic or subject would you purchase? What area of your life do you feel God has developed in you the most? Who is a person that you look up to because they have a lot of wisdom?
#2. Build your traditions carefully. Vs. 39. “…as was His custom…” What are your most meaningful traditions? What traditions did your family have growing up and how many of those have you incorporated into your own life? #3. Talk to God about your temptations. Vs. 40-46, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation…” If you could magically remove one temptation from your life what would that be?
What is in the cup??? #1. The wrath of God: The Bible specifically says, “The person who sins will die.” Ezekiel 18:20. Every person dies therefore every person sins. But we still want to deny our culpability for being a sinner! Why do we think of death as the natural circle of life rather than what it is, the curse and judgment for sinning against God?
By drinking the cup Jesus is providing:
#1. A Propitiation to God the Father: Satisfaction of justice. He Himself (Jesus) is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. I John 2:2. Stop and pray right now and thank Him for his payment for your sin.
#2. A Redemption from Satan: Purchased out of slavery. Knowing that you were not redeemed with… (the)precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” I Peter 1:18-19. Why do you think the Bible uses “slavery” language or images?
#3. A Substitutionary Atonement from a second death. “I have come to do thy will…” By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:9-10.
#4. A Reconciliation to God: change from alienation to friendship. …Christ gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself…20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ… II Corinthians 5:17-20. How are you doing at being an ambassador for Jesus?
Family Time: Get a small glass of water for yourself and each of your kids and put a some salt in it. Ask them how hard it would be to drink that small glass of water. Ask them to take a little tiny sip and talk about how it’s easy to drink sweet things but it’s difficult to drink yucky things. Read Luke 22:42 to them and talk about how Jesus drank the really difficult things and drinking stands for dying in our place.
