Life Matters
1 Peter 3:3-6
Pastor Jerry Koller
· Your adornment must not be merely external…(NASB).
· Do not let your adorning be external…(ESV)
Adornment: kosmos
· Decoration, according to what is in order
What is being addressed is the motivation or the perspective behind the adornment.
Verse 4 shows it is not the externals that are to be valued.
While these traits or characteristics are exhibited outwardly, they come from within, from the heart.
“Glamor is artificial and external; true beauty is real and internal. Glamor is something a person can put on or take off, but true beauty is always present. Glamor is corruptible; it decays and fades. True beauty from the heart grows more wonderful as the years pass.”
~Warren Wiersbe
The word spirit means the “disposition of the heart, or a frame of mind.”
Gentle has to do with a proper understanding of oneself that is expressed in relationship to other people.
· showing humility
· showing consideration
· insisting on one’s own rights
· not being pushy or overly assertive.
It is the word Matthew used when he quoted what Jesus said:
In Matthew 5:5, the word is translated meek.
Quiet is an adjective that means “tranquil or peaceful”
· It means “one’s heart is not disturbed.”
The Holy Spirit describes these qualities as precious in the sight of God.
Precious: excellence or of surpassing value
This is not something new, nor it is a new pattern to follow. This has been the way it is in God’s eyes for a very, very long time.
In verse 6, we find one of these holy women mentioned as an example. ...like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master…(1 Peter 36a)
· The word obey means to be obedient to, or to submit to.
Those who follow Sarah’s example of respectful submission are said to be her daughters.
The ESV - do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
APPLICATION
How we live matters to God.
How we live may attract someone to God.
How we live is a reflection of our hearts.
We need to adorn our hearts with imperishable qualities that are of extreme value in God’s eyes.
