Pathways Baptist Church
Sermon Series: "Famous Last Words"
Welcome to Pathways. We hope you will feel the presence of God's Spirit throughout today's worship service. Pastor Ed Williams will bring today's message in our sermon series, "Famous Last Words." Today's famous person is Abraham, looking at God's promises and Abraham's faith in Genesis 22 and John 2. This is the story of Abraham preparing to sacrifice Isaac. "God will provide" is the promise. Key ideas will include the ideas of making our needs known to God, God providing according to His plan, our trust in His provision. Souper Bowl of Caring

Pathways is collecting non-perishable food items and personal care items to support Gaithersburg HELP during the Souper Bowl of Caring through February 12. Hunger hurts and families in our community are in need. You may also give a financial donation to support City Gate, Inc., an urban ministry in Washington, D.C. seeking to open doors of opportunity, empowerment, and friendship for the children and the youth in the city, and their families. (please address your check to Pathways and write City Gate in the memo section). Your support is greatly appreciated. Food items needed for Gaithersburg HELP include: fortified pastas, healthy cereals, spaghetti sauce, rice in 1 or 2-lb bags, fruit packed in its own juice, canned or dried black beans or kidney beans, creamy peanut butter, grape jam or jelly, canned green beans or mixed vegetables, canned light meat or albacore tuna, canned chicken. Thank you.

Scripture Reading
Luke 11:5-9

5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread;
6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’
7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’
8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Sermon Series: Famous Last Words

Message: "Famous Last Words: Abraham, Promises, and Faith"
Pastor Ed Williams, Senior Pastor
Genesis 22 and John 2
The biblical emphasis on a multicultural gospel and church
1 Corinthians 1:18
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Hebrews 9:22
In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Genesis 22:11-14
11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”
“Here I am,” he replied.
12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”
13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”
The pivotal word in this story is _____________ (v.14)
Jehovah-Jireh = “the God who sees to it”
What God calls us to, God provides for.
John 1:34
I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.
An example of provision: John 2:1-11 = the wedding at Cana
John 2:1-11
Jesus Changes Water Into Wine
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,
2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so,
9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside
10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
What is Jesus’ business? What’s He about?
What is the solution when we are in need?
When Mary tells the servants, “Do whatever He tells you,” she is teaching us an important prayer principle when seeking God’s provision: Be willing to ask anything but yield everything.
Seeking God’s provision must always be shaped by “Not my will but Your will be done.”
Why would we trust God to provide for us? Because that’s what happens when we learn we are perfectly provided for (again and again).
Romans 8:31-35
More Than Conquerors

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.
34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?
Closing Song: 'TIS SO SWEET TO TRUST IN JESUS
Praise Team
Benediction:
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” -Isaiah 41:10, NIV
