Today is the fourth message in our series: Timeless - Truth For Today. We are covering the entire Bible in a 3 month period. The idea is to get a general overview of the Bible and become familiar with what is contained in each book, along with some of the main characters and events.

Big picture goal is to BE a better student of the Bible in 2023!

So far in this series we've covered the "Pentateuch" or the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy).
Then last week we added 3 more books that deal with the formation of the nation of Israel as they came into the Promised Land (Joshua, Judges, Ruth).
This morning we'll cover 4 more books that deal primarily with 2 topics: Kings and Kingdoms (1 & 2 Samuel and 1 & 2 Kings).
These books cover the nation of Israel from the starting point of its monarchy, to its spiritual collapse and division, and then its sliding downward to destruction and captivity by foreign nations.
They cover the period of time from the birth of the prophet Samuel around 1105 B.C. to the Babylonian captivity in 586 B.C. (about 519 years).
Literally scores of kings and important people are mentioned and a number of power kingdoms rise and fall in power, including Israel.
In these 4 books, we read of the Egyptians, the Philistines, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, and so many "ite" kingdoms.
As a different way to study these books, we'll look at a few key characters who fill these 519 years, 102 chapters, and 3,040 verses.

1. Five LEADERS worthy of our LOYALTY.
1 Corinthians 11:1

Samuel: 1 Samuel 3:19-21; 1 Samuel 16:7
David: 2 Samuel 5:1-10; 7:4-29; 22:1-51 (1 Samuel 13:14)
Solomon: 1 Kings 2:1-11:43
Elijah: 1 Kings 17:1-19:21; 2 Kings 1:1-2:12
Josiah: 2 Kings 22:1-23:30
2. Five WOMEN whose ways make us WONDER.

Hannah: 1 Samuel 1:1-2:10
Abigail: 1 Samuel 25:1-42
Michal: 1 Samuel 18:20-28; 19:11-17; 2 Samuel 3:1-14; 6:16-23
Bathsheba: 2 Samuel 11; 1 Kings 1:11-31; 2:13-19
Jezebel: 1 Kings 16:31; 18:4-19; 19:1-2; 21:5-25; 2 Kings 9

3. Five KINGS we should KEEP.

Once David and Solomon died, the nation of Israel split into 2 kingdoms.
The Northern Kingdom - 10 tribes known as either Samaria or Israel that had a total of 19 kings in their history, each of them a bad and ungodly person.
The Southern Kingdom - of 2 tribes known by the name of Judah and had a total of 20 kings, 8 of whom were good or godly leaders.

Asa: 1 Kings 15; Matthew 1:7-8
Jehoshaphat: 1 Kings 15:24; 22:41-50; 2 Chronicles 17-20
Uzziah: 2 Kings 15:13, 30-34
Hezekiah: 2 Kings 16:20; 18:1-20:21
Josiah: 1 Kings 13:2; 2 Kings 22:1-23:30
4. Five VILLIANS who were incredibly VISCIOUS.

Saul: 1 Samuel 14-15; 18-22
Goliath: 1 Samuel 17
Ahab: 1 Kings 16:28-34; 21-22
Jehu: 1 Kings 19:16-17; 2 Kings 10
Ahaz: 2 Kings 16 (Pastor Don blogged about him in "Bad Kid from Good Family")
5. Five SERVANTS walking in the SHADOWS.

The word servant is used 216 times in the 4 books we are looking at.
A good number of times these refer to David. Outside of him, there are a couple dozen people or groups of people that are called a servant.
Here are 5 interesting ones:
Saul’s Servant: 1 Samuel 9
Nathan: 2 Samuel 7:2-17
Methibosheth: 2 Samuel 4:4; 9; 16:1-4; 19:24-30
Elisha: 1 Kings 19:16-19; 2 Kings 2-13
Gehzi: 2 Kings 4:12-36; 5:20-27; 8:4-5
6. Five TRANSITIONS on the way to TRAGEDY.

Samuel to Saul: 1 Samuel 8-10
Saul to David: 1 Samuel 15-16
David to Solomon: 1 Kings 2
Solomon to Two Kingdoms: 1 Kings 11-12
Two Kingdoms to Assyria and Babylon: 2 Kings 17; 24-25

Transitions are a part of life. What we can exercise some control over is how we chose to respond to them. When faced with these transitions, we need to choose to honor God and to help people!
There are many lessons to take home with us today but one in particular comes from observations in these 4 books and the hundreds of names and stories. The lesson: The Lord is aware of us; our life and connection to Him.
