Dig Deeper:
1. At The Bridge Church, one of our core values is: We believe God’s Word – "We teach for life change.” We believe that all scripture is God-breathed and our final authority as followers of Jesus. Why is reading the Bible so necessary for our relationship with God and for our faith journey?
2. Read James 1:19-20. James gives the people a list of three things everyone should do. What are they? Why do you think these are important?
3. Have you experienced someone who was a good listener? How did they make you feel? What are a couple of ways you can practice listening over quick speaking?
4. Describe a time when you were quick to listen, slow to speak, or slow to anger. What was the outcome?
5. James tells the people to take note of their speech and quick temper. Do you think our culture is becoming more or less like what James instructs? Why?
6. Describe a time when you were listening to God’s Word not only physically, but spiritually. What did you hear and how did listening spiritually change your perspective?
7. How does being slow to speak allow you to listen more?
8. Do you know someone who is slow to anger? Do you find them also being quick to listen and slow to speak as well?
9. Read James 1:21. What is the importance of “ridding yourself of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent”?
10. How do you humbly receive something? What does James mean when he says, “implanted word”?
11. Read James 1:22. How would we be deceiving ourselves if we were only hearers of the word and not doers?
12. Read James 1:23-24. How is God’s Word a mirror for us?
13. Read James 1:25. What does James say we must do to be a doer of the word?
14. In verse 25, what does James call God’s law? In what way is the law “a law of liberty”? Wouldn’t you think it does the opposite?
15. Read James 1:27. Why do you think he mentions these three? Aren’t there other good deeds he could name?
16. Reading a map is different than following a map. How is reading the Bible different than following what it says to do?
Live It Out:
What is one area where you need to put your faith into action? What has God already said to you that you know you need to obey? Has God asked you to start serving? Has God asked you to start giving financially towards His kingdom? Has God asked you to take a step of faith? Do you need to get baptized? Could it for you to "be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger”? Is there a sin in your life that you need to get rid of? Take some time in prayer, asking that God would use His Word to further transform you. Pray that God would make you someone who not only hears the word, but also lives the word.
