GETTING TO KNOW YOU
Have you ever attended a church that had peculiar beliefs/practices? Describe them...

QUICK REVIEW
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time, caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

MAIN POINTS
The church is God’s creation, which he loves, and through which he works to carry out his mission in the world.

DIGGING DEEPER
The church….
1. Read 1 Timothy 3:14-15a. In verse 15a, Paul alludes to the church as “the household of God”. Why is it important for us to recognize the church as God’s house?
a. Describe God’s relationship to the church i.e. what has God done to create and maintain the church?
b. Paul then explains that the church is “the church of the living God”. How do you interpret this and why is it relevant? …is God’s creation, which He loves,...
2. Read Matthew 16:15-18; Ephesians 1:22-23; Ephesians 5:25-27. Based on these verses, what can we learn about how Jesus relates to the church?
a. Read Revelation 19:7-9. In this verse and in Ephesians 5:25-27 the church is described as the bride of Christ. How would you explain this to someone who is new to the faith?
b. Read 1 Corinthians 12:27. In this verse, the church is described as the “body of Christ”. How would you explain this to someone who is new to the faith?
c. If the church is the body of Christ and the bride Christ, what does this say about Jesus’ love for the church? How should this affect our love for the church? …and through which he works to carry out his mission in the world.
3. Read 1 Timothy 3:16-4:5. In these passages we can see the role of the church in the world today. Discuss:
a. In 1 Timothy 3:16 we are given the truth and facts about Jesus. How can and should we use this verse to proclaim the truth about Jesus to the world?
b. In 1 Timothy 4:1-3 we are told about the deceptions that will occur which could lead some away from the church. In what ways are we called to help those who are being deceived?
c. In 1 Timothy 4:4-5 what assurances are we given to help us protect ourselves and others from the falsehoods embraced by the world?
d. In summary, what is the role of the church in God’s mission?
