Jesus gets what it's like to be angry, because he got angry too, which means we can learn from him how to navigate anger.

---
Is anger good or bad?
It depends where it comes from and what you do with it.
Depends on how it flows to you and through you.

Anger is a passionate response to when we think something is wrong. Our resistance to what’s wrong.

Anger is like an alarm telling you something is wrong.

What makes the alarm bad or good?
What causes it to go off?

---
Let’s look at Jesus
Mark 3:1-5
1 Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.”

4 Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

Why is he angry? - Love
What does he do? - Love

John 2 – Jesus turning over the tables in the temple

Why is he angry?
What does he do?

---
#1 – Jesus wants to teach us that love should make the anger alarm go off and love should be the by-product of the alarm going off.
This is the flow of anger.

---
What makes you angry?
The question is what are you defending? What are you fighting for?

God isn’t looking for people who don’t get angry (the happy unbothered Christian).
He’s looking for and wants to see people who are angered by the right things.
He's looking for people who love the right things and therefore are angered by the right things.

---
What flows out of your anger?

Matthew 5:21-26
21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Genesis 4:2-7
Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

#2 – Jesus wants to teach us the slow to anger.

All throughout the Old Testament God is described as slow to anger.
Psalm 103:8-14
8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
9 He will not always accuse,
nor will he harbor his anger forever;
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13 As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
14 for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust.

Proverbs 16:32
Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.

James 1:19-20
19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

---
#3 – Jesus wants to teach us the let go of anger.

Jesus may have gotten angry but he didn’t walk around angry.
He could have been angry the whole time.
But there’s something about anger, that it’s not meant to be held onto.

Ephesians 4:26-27
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.
