INTRO: Spiritual Benefits of FASTING:
Freedom from Bondage
“Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke? Isaiah 58:6
Arms us for Protection
Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!” Esther 4:16
Strengthens our spirit to resist temptation
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”Matthew26:41
To Hear His Voice for God
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.John 10:27
Increases the Power of our Prayer
So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” Mark 9:29
Nurturing of Body and Soul
And at the end of ten days their features appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king’s delicacies. Daniel 1:15
Greater Intimacy with Jesus
ANALYSIS: Jesus Answers the question, “Why don’t your Disciples Fast? MARK 2:18-22
1. It wasn’t the time for Longing. And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. Vs 19-20.
2. It wasn’t the time for Legalism
No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment because the patch will pull away from the garment and the tear will be worse. Vs 21
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. Vs 22
3. It was time for New Life!
Instead, they put new wine into new wineskins and both are preserved. Vs 22
APPLICATION: How to PLAN for a Fast
Physically prepare your body.
Lean on a devotional/specific times for prayer.
Adopt the type of fast God is leading you to.
