We live in the shadow God’s generosity. We are the beneficiaries of the greatest gift ever given in our Savior. God brought His Light and His Presence into our world -- for you, for me.
The Scriptures use the motif of darkness and light to describe the Promised One - the coming of the Messiah and the activity of God.
Jesus identified himself as the prophesied light.

“I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” -John 8:12
The rules of engagement changed at Christmas….
God who was high and lifted up became lowly and could be found lying in a manger.

The independent God became a dependent baby.

God who was known as Father revealed himself as the Son.

The untouchable became flesh and dwelt among us so we could see the way HOME and the way to peace with our Creator.

He was sent into our darkness - so WE could see the light of God.…
-Isaiah 9:2
The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.

Christmas is the story of light coming to our dark world.
Christmas is the coming of the great light of God into our dark world.

It is only in His great light that we can find peace that does not eradicate the chaos of this world, but is fully present in it.
Read about God's Light:
-Isaiah 8:21-9:7
-Isaiah 42:1-14
-Isaiah 49:1-15
-Isaiah 60:1-3
-John 8:12
-John 1:1-18
-John 3:16-21
-Colossians 1:9-14
-Ephesians 1:15-23 & 5:8-11
-2 Corinthians 4:4-6
-1 Peter 2:9
The apostle John contextualizes his account of the words and deeds of his good friend Jesus in the opening prologue of his gospel that crackles with energy and wonder! John wants to tell us, Jesus is the very Word of God - the Light of God - He is God - light and life himself.

v. 5 The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

John has seen the Light of the World with his own eyes. He’s gone fishing with him. He’s eaten with him, prayed with him. He’s watched him endure the most horrific death imaginable and then COME BACK TO LIFE! — SO John knows that there is is no darkness in the universe that can permanently grasp and defeat this light.
The darkness can not overcome it.
the apostle Peter would record years later…calling all followers of Jesus to remember:

1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

This is a life-changing kind of light.
A transformational kind of light.
This Light will never be overcome.
