After Jesus had been born, a band (we don’t actually know how many there were) of wise men and scholars came to Jerusalem seeking the new Jewish king that had been born according to Old Testament prophecy. Naturally Herod, the Roman king over that area, was concerned that this new king would take his place and authority away.
Herod sent the wisemen on their way with instructions to return to him after worshipping Jesus so they could tell him where to go to worship Jesus too. The wise men had with them gifts suitable for a king, gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. After worshiping Jesus and giving Him their gifts, they returned to their own country without returning and telling Herod where to go to find Jesus.
